VAN'S TRAVELS CONTINUE

The famous "beehives" at Purnululu

Here is just part of Van's latest adventures.... on his motorbike, through outback parts of Oz. I've left out some "dodgey" bits.

Well, the next day we trundled into Purnululu National Park….don’t you just LOVE that name…p-ur-n-u-lu-lu…a beautiful name which they buggered up by calling it Bungle Bungles. Have you heard anything so beautiful as puuurrrnn…oo…loo…looo…and anything so ugly as Bungle twice. To make things better, one of my favourite words – piccaninny – is the name of one of the major walks in the Bungles…that is, I did the Piccaninny Walk in the Purnululu National park….lovely stuff.

Well, we did other magic things too in Puuurrrrnn…ooo….loooo….looooo . Against my conviction of many years NEVER to ride in a single engined aircraft I was seduced by a combination of the harmlessly softish roundness of the parked helicopter bubble on the early morning green grassed tarmac with the anticipated beauty of Puuuurrr…noooo…loooooo…looooo from the air in the soft dawn light. So – with classic fickleness I allowed myself to be drawn to the seductress – sat in the soft FRONTNESS of the bubble and felt a comfortable satisfaction ooze over me as the glass balloon firstly enveloped me with snugness and warmth, and then gently levitated to a small distance above the grass with a smoothness that made my confidence rise. Oh….there is no fool like an Old Fool. Then she shot up into the air, hit the Jet Stream which wreaks hurricane havoc on the US mid-west, tumbled and bounced through the tumultuous air like a ping pong ball in a Chinese tournament, dipped her snout to the ground in defiance of the windy tempest and butted her way against the desert wind towards what is reputed to be a beautiful set of domes and gorges. Oh….Gawd…..the only thing that kept that chopper in the air for the next 30 minutes was the Herculean strength of my left arm as it gripped the glassy bubble and held it 2000 metres above the ground. I would have used my second arm [that’s the right one] except I needed it to take one-armed photos of the beautiful Bungle Bungles. Not a bad job I did either. I reckon I am the only fella who has held an helicopter in the air with only one arm while taking 56 photos – at least 2 of which are OK!!

Apart from the uninterrupted fear the 30 minutes produced a spectacularly interesting oversight of the 30 kms x 20 kms Purnululu “massif” [fucking big rock] with a [terrified] birdseye view of all the gorges and domes and walks – and most of all – the colours!!!
Now, this will not be easy cos the English language is my only tool and I aint so hot at it….but….try and imagine a “massif” which is carved in many places to a depth of 300 metres. Between the gorges there is sandstone which has “blocked” over the millennia which means that it has split into cubes [as rocks do]….these little cracks have then weathered in an accelerated way and the corners have weathered twice as quick as the sides….so domes start to form. That is one of the aspects. But the second is that each dome is made of several strata of rock…each different from the one above..the dominat colours being a sandy yellow, a burnished brown, and a reddish ochre, with several bands of stained [by bacteria – that is another story] blackish stata….so put it all together you get these “bee-hive” dome s…wonderful….!!!!
Now – think of the soft lights of dawn..the hues of greens and blues and lilacs on the horizon…and how it pervades the ether for several minutes…then to be splashed open by a sudden bloop of yellow…golden sun-yellow….well…as the helicopter ping-pongs its struggle with the now-insistently gusting wind…the multi-coloured domes are topped with a golden head…and a set of different colour variations all mixing it with the originals in indescribable patterns and wonder-colour! A heady cocktail, indeed!!! And, all this I was able to absorb from the pinging pong!!! Not bad, huh?
Once on the ground we went walking….Piccanninny Gorge and walking trail….Cathedral Gorge [where the guide, in a moment of true treachery, insisted I sing the National Anthem – hey….no wurries..got all the words right!!]. All the same ooohhhs and aahhhhh’s of previous emails….but something new and extraordinaire happened!!! What? I hear you say?
Well, as we returned to the boos, there in the shady shed, was a family of local Aboriginals. Two very old people…black as pitch…with huge ivory smiles..the fella with a big gap as wide as the Heads in the middle of his….then a swag of little’uns up to six-ish….and a little later appeared a young man [30’s] who had fathered most of this guggle-glicking-laugghing-rabbiting brood. The Oldies turn out to be The Owners of Puuuuuurrrrr…noooo….loooo……loooooo…and what are they doing there? Well, they are just starting out on a week long series of camp outs – in the “massif”. With what purpose? Well, they had with them a young University thesied woman by the name of Sue Donaldson who works for the Heritage Council and she had negotiated this event so she could “harvest” many of the original inhabitants’ spiritual and ownership and dreamtime stories…how about THAT!!! Because I am a little shy about approaching people I had to call on unknown depths of valour to introduce myself to these people and to have them tell me all this. When they reckoned I was interested in them and their stories, the old woman [Sheila…yep, Sheila no joking] points to a big rock behind me and away on a distant escarpment. She asks me what it looks like…and when I saw it for the first time I immediately saw that it looked like a dog. No mistake…VERY true likeness of a dog’s head. So – I says: A dog…..errr….how about a dingo? YES!! Sheila says..THAT is Dingo Rock!! OK….pretty cool, I reckon. But, that aint all…she goes on: and there is ANOTHER Dingo Rock down at Halls creek [120 kms away]….Cool, says I…
A bit of silence…..
And, says Sheila….they TALK to each other…..
Wow….now that is as cool as it gets….
She explained a bit more….and grinning Peter-with-the-gap…he reckons they are spirits which discipline the teenage boys…and that they start a-howling when things are crook with the young’uns and this requires the adults and elders to move against the undisciplined young. Ooooo—errrr…..so, we had a cup of tea…took a cuppla photies…shook hands and went our grinning ways. What a coup!!!! I couldn’t believe how lucky we had been.

Sorry about the photos. They don't do justice to the place. These were just some of the shots we took when there 3 years ago. You can see Fay in one of the photos if you look hard enough.

Lynn Ludwig Maybe Sydney
Rob & Julianne Hughes Oatley (near Hurstville)
Graham & Janet Wright Near Liverpool
Merv Helen Smith Probably Baulkham Hills
Bob & Colleen (Brophy) Cureton Sydney somewhere

Dino & Nola Forsythe Marks Pt (Newcastle)
Grahame & Fay (Bailey) Keast Dubbo

What a lot of fun we had!

Beautiful German tucker cooked by Sue and Co. (Don’t know who the company is!!!) Dancing, saw playing (none other than Rob Hughes), hat exchanging (you had to be there,) plenary singing, cabaret singing by introduced entertainer, entertainment by 2 people doing German dancing that looked like Mavis and Ethel (thanks Sue and Marion), bus tour, wineries visit, BBQ at a horse stud (thanks Lyn and Bob and the Knuckle group), visit by Ken Howard (thanks Dino), big brekky on Sunday morning and a great luncheon cruise on Lake Burley Griffin for those who still had some stamina left. All we needed was Jock & Russ to prance in unannounced, Dougie to swim across to the cruise boat while we were inadvertently watching the scenery or Van to roar into Kings’ back room on his motorbike and we’d have had everything! I hope the photos give some idea of the fun we had. The collambiance was excellent Bill!
For corrections, comments and other, please click on comment below and straighten me out. Did you enjoy the weekend? Would you have liked to have been there? Are you coming next time?

WESTERN AUST

Keasts had a beaut time with Cynthia (Richardson) and Kommer while in the west. Here are some snaps from that area along with some comments by Cyn.
The four at the lookout near Mundaring Dam.

Fay, Cyn and Kommer on the dam wall.

Good shot of the dam.

It's a hellova lot of water.

O'Connor Trail nearby.

More from the O'Connor Trail.

Gra: Guess I'll be seeing quite a number this coming w/e in Canberra at Gerd and Sue (Upton) King's.

Cyn: Have fun - you've hardly set foot on Dubbo and you're off again. But I remember you saying it would be busy when you got back. Birth of a grandson coming up soon, too? Congrats to all before it happens :)

Gra: I've just been talking to Andy Baltaks (62-63), and Graham Brown.

Cyn: Andy's name 'rings a bell'. And I vaguely remember someone with a 'high resistence' to the cold. He would have been quite noticeable - the Wagga winters were cold! Amazing for you to meet up with him again.

Gra: Hope you're enjoying the winter wherever you are.

Cyn: Great - but heavy rain at times - at one time I drove home thro' blinding rain to find the house surrounded by 10-15cm water - quickly subsided tho' The crisp fresh June air is really nice though. Great for catching up on a few walks etc. Nice change eating winter tucker too :)Want to revisit Mundaring via some pics?? It's a world far from yours now, I imagine. Did this walk again recently with a visitor - pics with blue sky are from then - taken with our Canon G9 (not the in-your-pocket IXUS 400).

All the best. With love from Kommer & Cynthia.

VAN DAVY'S TRAVELS

Hey....g'day there to all of you...even those who don't read this silly stuff!! For those who do read it but keep that fact secret - I understand. For those who don't read it because you think it to be boring - you win the prize for best thinkers. For those who read the stuff and also reply, with sillier stuff, or with smart-arse comments, or with sensible suggestions, or insightfull recounts of your own experiences, or warnings of dire consequences if foot put wrong, or just some friendly encouragements - to all of you I say, "Thank you - and please keep up the emails, consistent with your own personality and culture and religion, of course".
To my surprise I have had many - yes, many - emails from WWTC friends. I love it!!! So - here we go with another little report:
G'day friends all...I hope the beginning of winter finds you all warm and well. For me and Adam, the oncoming of winter has meant several very very cold nights in hugging the ground in pup tents in desert nights. The skies crystal with clarity, cold and philosophy! Not that we are complaining...a trial of choice. For poor young Adam I'm not sure about the choice bit..poor bugger has to put up with the dust, dirt, unpleasantness and discomfort of the ride AS WELL AS my tangled maze of spaghettied theories of beginnings and ends, of religions and politics. Enuff to send a young'un barmy, but being a polite sort of Lad..a born again Christian in fact...he gives me a gentle ladle full of his own boiling theories and takes his aching brain to tent - early - and listens to his MP3 or watches a feckin' flick on his whizz-bang IT doozie whattie thingie!! Arrggghhhh....the young!! Why cannot they be like us - simple, hard-working, productive, sporting? The buggers...it'd be much easier to critize if they didn't KNOW SO BLOODY MUCH!!! However that does not diminish the tribulations experienced by this rapidly ageing 63 year old. Cold is cold. Bluddie cold is bluddie cold. Memories of spooned wife and warming cuddles help little...flamin' useless in fact!! Tents and desert floors produce aches and stiffness I cannot ever remember achieving on a football field, or even in political washing machine.
In fact, for me - 2 weeks on the road has resulted in soreness, fatigue, aches - but lots and lots of satisfaction. A bit like some of my friends describe the church attendance schedule.Well, I think I emailed you from Alice a week ago. We have now arrived in Halls Creek - safely and without further breakages to body or bike. This was the centre piece of my trip. I woke up one morning a year or so ago - thoroughly pissed off with my apparently useless Ph D - and thought of greater things. I will ride my bike through the Red Centre says I to I. Right through the guts I said silently to me, with just a little screaming bravado. When one tries to convert such a sillie-dillie drongo thought into some practical exercise [a life's work for me] one's eye is drawn to a map. My first maps saw no road, track or trail across "the guts" and it wasn't until I 'netted ExlorOz.com that I managed to find the Tanami Track joining Alice to Halls Creek. Bingo!!!Oh, dear!!! The Tanami Track was, this last weeek.....sooooooo rough and soooo hard going that this wonderful bike, despite its great engineering and continuing staying power, lost [a] a mudguard [b] a side light [c] a rear flicker light [d] the protection grid for the headlights. All of them either fell off or broke under the strain of the relentless battle with corrugations, gibbers, sand, bull-dust....oh, what a feeeling he jibberished through teeth still clacking from racking. We were told at Tillmouth Well [200 kms from Alice and 870 kms from Halls Creek] that it was going to rain for 2 days in one days time. Huh!! What would these bluddie red-necks know?? Huh? I looked at the weather map that night and determined that it could not be so. Big "high" over Australia...wind from the east....all low systems being pushed south and east. No wurries!! So - we rode on to Rabbit Flat [420 kms] and camped the night. Next morning we had a good guffaw at the yokel from Tillmouth who had said it was gunna rain..and we hit the road again for Halls Creek. We had planned to stop over for the night at Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater but with a few miles to go I asked a group of trail bikers who had just been in there what the going was like and they said that it was deep with sand and yuk...and that one of them had gone over, most of them had nearly gone over - so I judged that the track was beyond my skills loaded up as I am with heavy gear, and a little [quite a bit] short of the BMX skills required for deep and lengthy sections of sand. So - Adam stripped his bike of all his gear, left me keeping the Tanami ants, lizards and snakes company, and dusted off in a cloud down the road towards the Crater - even then he said he nearly came off...and that there was no chance I would have made it fully l oaded and that he doubted he could have made it fully loaded. So - I waited at the main road for 80 minutes while he haired it into the Crater, walked a cuppla hundred metres, took a photo, and returned - which left us just enuff time, with some hard riding to arrive in Halls Creek just on night fall. We stayed overnight in a motel and, guess what [?????] when we woke this morning? Yep - pissing down rain - so, if we had gone into the Crater and camped as we had planned we would now be stuck in the middle of nowhere with God Knows how long to get out!! Instead, we are snoring together in a comfy motel room. I wonder when those yokels will LEARN!!?
Tomorrow we had planned to do Purnululu National Park [Bungle Bungle] but the 53 kms road in is heavy with sand apparently - so we have agreed to share a 4WD which we pick up tomorrow morning at 7:00 and drive, with all our camping gear stacked in the car, the 160 kms to one end of the Bungles by 10:00 and do the walk, then drive to the other end to camp the night so we can do the other walk the 2nd day. All good - except that the all-up cost of the 4WD will be around $600 for the 2 days.....ahhhhh well....that has to be offset agains the petrol for the bikes and two days accomodation...so it'll be a bit less than that, and I cannot see that we will be back this way again very soon. After the Bungles, we plan to head west to Derby, Broome and get some local knowledge about roads...we may still do the Dampier Peninsula....maybe in another 4 WD....but, in any event, we have decided [against my bettter judgement] that we will give the Gibb River Road a 'go'. Who knows how I'll get through that lot, but we'll have a lash anyway!!Wow - this country is so feckin' big - and it can be beautiful and dangerously brutal all at the one time. The endlessness of everything has got me asking myself all the same questions I did at college, and at Uni, and during my first marriage...and then the second..oh, and the third....questions also about what we have done to our indigenes that so many of them are so completely...what do we do about these things? Gawd.....it's enuff to turn one to....ah, dearrie me, dearrie me....Hmm, well thats about it - I'd better go - got a little bike fixing to do.

All the best.....Van 6 June 2008
